_ for some reason, a big chunk of my heart lies in jefferson county, and so, straight from the usual highway grind, we stopped off for catfish in the small town of taylor. barely more than a bend in the road, a post office, and a general store, taylor is known for its taylor grocery catfish. we arrived on sunday afternoon, and everyone was out enjoying the end of the weekend. as county law prohibits the sale of alcohol on sundays, it was strictly b.y.o.b. we stayed sober and picked out the details. _ steve here waited out the 30 minutes for a table on the porch. he and his wife lived in birmingham, alabama, but have an apartment in oxford for the ol' miss games. we have to go see one, he said, triple-underlining the word 'have'.
_ his friend sam caught my ear, saying something about girls with beautiful legs but not-so beautiful faces. something about a paper bag (or two) all meant in good taste.
_ joy.
_ and linda, who recommended peach pie (though, she admitted, it wasn't very manly)
_ inside, the classic southern or uber-southern atmosphere was provided by these three, banging away in the corner of the room, on a small stage raised just tripping-height above the floor.
_ if you knew the words you sang along, or just clapped and stamped your feet.
_ we're sick to death of hovering shots of food, so let's just give you a verbal description: whole catfish, fried. or, in honor of the location, let's try it in the faulkner mode: brown on a plate, the flag flapping, caddie said eat up so he ate up.
_ customers have been writing on the walls for a decade and a half. if you look closely, you can see many overlapping generations of customers (well, maybe).
_ and more nostalgic scrawlings on a table cloth. no idea what the extra F in BFFF stands for. please email me with responses. most appropriate answer wins.
_ after dinner, our neighboring table coralled us into group portraits.
_ and we brought them together.
_ and shifted their axis. a pleasant sunday.

_ by the time we got back to our neighborhood, the rain was pouring down. the streets were so leafy and overgrown, and we knew this was the best time to see them. we stayed outside. others had the same idea.
_ there's something about a summer rainstorm. the rain's not cold, but it still clears the streets of people. and so, for a rare moment, you'll have the city to yourself.

_ there's nothing better than an overgrown sidewalk, except when it's *literally* overgrown, cobblestones beneath still clear.

_ after a 14 hour drive from key west, we crashed the sigma alpha epsilon frat house at the university of west florida. it wasn't on campus, exactly...
_ ...but all the fraternity paraphinelia was on display. we got in real late at night and crashed on the couch in an otherwise empty house. a few hours later, the fraternity brothers started to return home after a night out... check out our video.
_ our host, kyle: shown here looking very casual.
_ it was the summertime, however, school was out of session, so there wasn't so much craziness. only hints of past disorder/debauchery.
_ this particular house has won many awards over the years for the best nationwide chapter of the sigma alpha epsilon frat.
_ we checked out the rec room, with its strange wall of chairs (lots of sitting down? musical chairs? with beer?)
_ and what happened here?
_ a former benefactor, who gifted the fraternity the sigma alpha epsilon ring.
_ most importantly, however, we had to pay dylan back for his 2am wakeup the night before. at 8am we stormed in on him. see you kids, good luck graduating.

_ a 360 view of rosenblatt stadium the morning of the second college world series game between UCLA & South Carolina. CLICK THE IMAGE TO VIEW IT FULLSCREEN. this is the last year that they are using the stadium for the series, and next year they relocate to less-hallowed grounds elsewhere in the city.
_ outside rosenblatt stadium, just before all the fans arrive for the second game in the college world series finals. CLICK THE IMAGE TO VIEW IT FULLSCREEN the community around rosenblatt stadium filed a petition to prevent the move, but even with the help of a commercial starring kevin costner (whose field of dreams was filmed kind of close, off in north-east iowa), the city forged ahead. nearby doorley zoo, one of the best in the world, will take over the site, and hopefully build some kind of similar place with dolphins in the outfield and penguins as umpires etc.
_ because we just know south carolina will win it, we only photographed fans of the gamecocks.
_ go cocks, they all said.

_ this guy won some award for his shorts.
