habitat for humanity, new orleans, louisiana

_ we rolled into new orleans late on friday, and woke up early the next morning to drive down to harvey, la, to volunteer with habitat for humanity.

_ though we wish we could have spent more than one measly day there, we threw ourselves into the business of siding and shingling as best we could.

_ we worked on two homes side-by-side on one street. they were the future homes of two of the day's volunteers. shaneka here was under the house inserting the very same insulation that will keep her air conditioner nice and efficient.

_ while raymond helped us with the siding. despite his advice, however, we still hammered more thumbs than nails.

_ while we worked, sweating buckets under the lousiana sun, clouds billowed above us.

_ dan here was our project supervisor, he's been working with habitat for a few years now, and had just been promoted the day before. good job dan, you're our friend.

_ we worked quickly to finish up what needed to be done.

_ and took all the gear to the container.

_ bruce was one of three teachers from new york. they'd decided to spend their summer wisely, and were in new orleans for a week volunteering for habitat. they'd been on the site for five days. apparently the learning curve was pretty steep, but it didn't seem that way at all: they were sawing and hammering without stop, all the while narrating their actions in the way of good teachers.

_ the horizon blackened quickly. all the wood was covered, and we said our quick farewells. work was done for the day.

_ now, good luck to whoever's doing that top section...
