dallas, texas

_ our infinitely generous host John Harris, whose hobby is roping. sunday morning, first thing, we drove out to the arena north of destin, for a charity roping competition with 70 teams of two: one rider roping the horns out front, the other a 'heeler', going for the back legs.

_ each round lasts an average of eight to fifteen seconds. the steer bolts the chute and passes into the arena. the riders give chase.

_ the header and heeler navigate into their positions, and the header waits for the angle and the movements to line up, and then releases. hopefully the loop of rope catches the horns, and the rider pulls hard to the left, the steer following.

_ the heeler waits for the right moment and then throws his loop to catch the steer's back legs. finally, with both ends wrapped, the riders back up. the ropes become taut, and the steer is immobilized.

_ tim edmonds is the former owner of ironhorse motorbikes. he sold it all off and picked up roping, and he's pretty great at it. everytime he'd finish a run he'd canter over to his wife and young kids and say 'how you doing pretty babies!'

_ betsy and tim traveled up from greenville, texas, where they live and work. betsy, apparently, has a 'boring job'. she showed us how to rope correctly.

_ dirk, roper.
