boulder creek, boulder, colorado

_ boulder creek runs right through downtown boulder, but it's just west, upriver, that we found the rope swing at eben fine park. katie, her mother and brother had come down to swim a bit. though they're from denver, katie's pretty familiar with boulder. she has an old vw camper van and got in to the habit of running away from home and driving up here to camp out.

_ she and jack watch people swinging from the other side of the river. some kids were showing off, wrapping the rope around the tree trunk and climbing higher, to swing out further over the rapids.

_ adam was providing volunteer tube coaching, though all his students were (in his guessing) pretty drunk.

_ heavy rains from the week before had swelled the river, and this was one of the first few days that access wasn't restricted. the old rope swing, in a better location downstream, had been swept away along with a narrow bridge, and nobody had tied it back quite yet.

_ medical marijuana dispensaries outnumber starbucks locations in boulder, so everyone seemed pretty relaxed.

_ the open-container laws that cripple outdoor fun in the summer are thankfully kind of lax here.
